Forecasters called for a day with wall-to-wall sunshine as Peterborough Speedway welcomed its biggest event of the 2024 regular season – Saturday, June 15th – with the return of the APC Late Model and Dayco Super Stock tours.

The venue that is Making Memories for Life kicked-off the Father’s Day weekend event with a 50-lap headliner for the Dayco Super Stock Series that saw former track champion Anthony DiBello and defending race winner Carson Nagy lead the field to the Great Canadian RV green flag. DiBello took the advantage, but the pace was slowed for an early race debris caution with a pair of laps complete. There was a tight, 3-way battle for the lead on the restart, as Nagy claimed the top spot, with Lane Zardo and Shawn Chenoweth completing the top-3. Despite some intense battles deep in the pack, Nagy wasn’t challenged the rest of the way and scored the win over Chenoweth, Zardo, DiBello and defending Peterborough Speedway Super Stock track champion Miles Tyson. Marlie Owen was the top finishing home track regular, bringing her No. 21 machine across the line 8th at the checkered flag. Brad Lavalle – who made a last-minute decision to enter the event – finished 15th.

The night’s 20-lap Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock ‘A’ main – with Kyle Novis, wheeling the popular No. 21 Mini Cooper and Samuel Arnott showing the way – was next to the line. John Bates looked to use some muscle to take the top spot from the front row starters, but wound-up in a 3-way fight for the lead with Novis and Mark Griffin. Novis took the advantage just before the halfway point, while the rest of the field was fighting for positions in his rear-view mirror. Shortly after a late race yellow flag, Sean Kennedy moved into 3rd behind Novis and Bates, but his charge to the front had run out of time. Novis, Bates, Kennedy, Tegan Stanley and Griffin would make-up the top-5 at the checkered flag. Mark Griffin’s No. 58 was disqualified in post-race inspection, moving Victoria McLenon into 5th spot in the final rundown.

With the starting grid depleted by a heat race crash, triggered by a blown engine, a 15-lap Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck feature event that had Scott Jacobs and Shawn Murray on the front row rolled from the staging area. Murray held the lead early, with Mark Gordon working the outside line and taking the top spot just past the halfway mark. He held-off a challenge from his son Kyle to earn a trip to Dart Heating & Air Conditioning Victory Lane. Murray, Kurt Batty and Scott Jacobs completed the top-5.

Jake Sheridan and Connor Pritiko led the way as the KOD Disposal 100 came to the stripe. Sheridan took an early lead, with defending Peterborough Speedway track champion Ryan Kimball moving into the runner-up spot. The race pace was slowed for an incident in the 2nd turn, with 13 laps on the scoreboard. Shortly after the restart, Dan McHattie – who had started 8th – took over 2nd position and took control of the main event with 3rd turn pass for the lead with 30 laps complete. The pack started to put backmarkers a lap down with 34 circuits on the board, before another caution flag brought the field back together about 3 laps later. At the halfway point, McHattie held an advantage of 6 car lengths over Sheridan, with Shae Gemmell, Jo Lawrence and Blair Wickett rounding-out the top 5. Dan McHattie’s next obstacle was some heavy race traffic at lap 71, but he survived a late-race yellow flag to log a dominating race win. Wickett, Sheridan, Lawrence and Pritiko would follow the hometown favourite across the stripe.

Kyle Gordon – wheeling the No. 62 in place of Howie Crowe – and his father Mark Gordon shared the Renegade Truck qualifying events. Tegan Stanley steered ‘Rhonda the Honda’ to a couple of Bone Stock heat race wins, with the others going to Sean Kennedy and John Bates.

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race inspection.

Bullring bullet points: With his main event win, Dan McHattie also collected a $2500 Hometown Hero bonus, put in place by Jeff Drimmie and event sponsor KOD Disposal.

Next on the 2024 schedule at Peterborough Speedway is the annual Autism Awareness Night – in support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation – Saturday, June 22nd. Action includes the home track Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock, Late Model and Junior Late Model divisions, plus the TQ Midgets. Grandstands open at 5:00, with the first Great Canadian RV green flag at 6:00.
