LONDON, Ontario —- Shae Gemmell may have dominated the event, but he did not have an easy route to picking up the checkered flag in the Castrol Great Canadian 300 at Delaware Speedway for the APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series.
Gemmell found his way to the lead after an early at Lap 48 forced early race leader Jake Sheridan down pit road, and paved the way ahead of the competition with J.R. Fitzpatrick in hot pursuit. He led the event all the way until he made the decision at Lap 190 to put on his new tires for the final run to the checkered.
He methodically then worked his way forward, moving into the runner-up spot with 16 laps to go. He stalked Jake Sheridan over the next several laps, getting alongside of him with seven laps to go. Gemmell then took over the top spot with five laps to go, pacing the remaining laps en route to picking up the victory.
Sheridan was the early race leader, taking the initial lead on Lap 3 and paced the field until he was one of several drivers caught up in an incident at Lap 77. Ahead of him, Carson Nagy suffered a failure, spinning before the field, causing a pile-up on the front stretch just off turn four. Sheridan was fortunate with the damage being restricted to minor at the rear of the car and a flat tire, allowing him to pit for repairs and return to the field.
He drove his way back through the pack, making his decision to pit for his new tires at the halfway mark of the event. He inherited the lead when Gemmell made the decision to pit, and looked to be the dominate car en route to victory lane until the late-race pass. The runner-up finish for Sheridan was enough, though for him to take home the belt for winning the NTN Bearings Triple Crown for his performance across the three long-distance events this season.
J.R. Fitzpatrick made a rare appearance with the series this season, running consistently up front throughout the event en route to a third for car owner Jason Hathaway. Josh Stade quietly stayed out of trouble all night inside the top-five to place fourth, which was enough to be crowned the 2025 APC Auto Parts United Late Model Champion.
Past Series Champion Dale Shaw rounded out the top-five ahead of Shawn Chenoweth, Connor Pritiko, Taylor Holdaway, Rick Spencer-Walt, and Junior Farrelly. Of note, Pritiko had a fast enough car to contend up front with the leaders, but was forced to spend his night rebounding from issues after an unscheduled pit stop for the window net coming down under green. Farrelly also had a couple incidents of his own during the event.
Kyle Steckly came in with a chance to take home the series championship, but was one of the drivers who suffered significant damage during the initial incident at Lap 48. He spent plenty of time on pit road, returning to the track minus his front fenders and left side door panel. He then had to make a couple trips down pit road under green flag conditions for the car sparking on the track. He was credited with a 18th-place finish.
Jesse Kennedy was part of the conversation within the top-three for the first two-thirds of the event, but contact with Gemmell saw him spin down the backstretch off of turn two, and make contact with the inside wall. He retired from the event on Lap 210, finishing 19th,
NASCAR Canada Series regular D.J. Kennington also suffered rear-end damage to his car at Lap 48, returning to the track but ultimately heading pit side with just 127 laps. He was credited with a 23rd-place finish. The incident saw the event end early for Carson Nagy and Jonathan Arts, as well.
Home track favourite Ray Morneau’s night ended early with a mechanical failure with just 77 laps on the board.
