INNISFIL, Ontario — If Wally Wilson was looking to come out of the gate by making a statement, he did just that at Sunset Speedway this past weekend. The driver of the No. 69 Modified dominated the Spring Velocity feature on Sunday.
Starting on pole after winning his qualifying heat, Wilson quickly grabbed the advantage ahead of the field, and stretched it out from there. By the time Lap 30 came around, he had stretched his advantage by a straightaway over the competition in the season opener. It marks his third career modified feature victory after winning an Overkill Enterprises OSCAAR Modified event at Peterborough Speedway, and a race at Sunset last season.
With his pace over the field, the attention shifted to the battle for second, which was not as clear cut. A/J. Emms held it throughout the event, but Amanda Balson was able to close in on the back bumper of the No. 14 Modified as the laps ticked down. She found herself right there with five laps to go, though was unable to find a way by before the checkered waved.
Heat 2 winner Josh Gruntz secured a fourth finish ahead of Darin Malcolm, who rebounded after suffering issues during the second practice session.
Tyler Bouillon finished sixth, with Luke Gignac rebounding for seventh after suffering damage in an accident during practice. Ben Gruntz had a throttle hang going into turn one, making contact with Gignac before hitting the outside wall. Both drivers were okay, but it ended the day early for Gruntz.
Matt Haufe and Andrew Massey rounded out the field for the season opener.
