Blaise Shaw Victorious in Second Annual Allan Lankin Cup at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — With a combination of speed and resilience, Blaise Shaw was able to pick up the victory in the Allan Lankin Cup on Sunday at Sunset Speedway.

The driver of the No. 81 Shaw Motorsports Mustang quickly made the field aware he would be a contender for the win on Sunday, turning a third-place qualifying effort into leading the first of the three features on just the second lap. He then paced the remaining laps en route to the checkered flag.

The second feature, though, it seemed like his run for glory was going to hit a snag after he suffered front end damage on Lap 1 in an incident. Curtis Burnett got loose off of turn four, coming across the nose of Madisson Tienkamp into traffic, catching both Shaw and Shawn Taylor. Burnett and Taylor were done for the feature, while Shaw’s team quickly made repairs to the mustang and got him back on track. He then made his way through the field to salvage a fifth-place finish.

Taking the green flag in 12th for the final segment, Shaw wasted no time in making his way through traffic as he cracked the top-three with just five laps on the board. He would take the lead on Lap 7, leading the remaining laps to pick up the checkered flag.

The pair of victories combined with the fifth was enough to take the overall victory in a tie-breaker with Doug Butler. The defending race winner was the definition of consistency with a pair of seconds and a third through the three segments.

Jacob Sutcliffe got third overall, despite finding himself going across the finish line backwards in the final segment. The current Sunset Speedway points leader posted the quickest time in qualifying at 16.066 seconds, and placed fourth in the first segment before picking up the checkered flag in the second 25-lap feature. The third segment saw him have to make an early pit stop for a flat tire, rebounding to cross the finish line in eighth after being spun on the last lap by Johnny Paradzinski.

Ryder White and Jordan Howse was fourth and fifth overall, followed by Flamboro Speedway points contender Bobby Mercer, Coleridge Phinnemore, Paradzinski, Charlie Smith and Tienkamp. Notably, Smith took the green flag for the first segment of three from the back of the field after having his qualifying time disallowed due to failing technical inspection.

Wyatt Sutcliffe was 11th overall despite crashing out of the final segment after contact on Lap 1, followed by Chandler Smith, Peter Wakeling, Rob Crick, Chris Allard, Taylor, Eric Rainey, Chris Cunningham, Bob Phinnemore, Peyton Lewis, Burnett, Randi Seguin, and Nate Yano.
