INNISFIL, Ontario —- In an event that will feature some of the best Pro Late Model racers across the province, Rick Spencer-Walt is hoping to be standing on the centre step of the podium.
Spencer-Walt will enter the Junior Hanley Classic at Sunset Speedway, behind the wheel of a brand new Wight Motorsports chassis owned by Michael Goudie. Goudie’s involvement in motorsports include starts behind the wheel in a Dirt Late Model and in the NASCAR Canada Series.
Adding another crown jewel to the shelf would surprise nobody for Spencer-Walt, in knowing the resume he has put together across the province. He has championships at multiple tracks, including Sunset Speedway, and has won previous crown jewels like Fall Velocity and the Autumn Colours Classic.
Spencer-Walt made his return to the Late Model division last weekend at Sunset Speedway, behind the wheel of his familiar No. 31 Late Model alongside long-time program supporter Eldon Wallis. Despite only getting two laps in practice due to water being found in the fuel, he posted a 14.763 second lap in time trials to qualify him third for the 50-lap feature.
However, he would learn following the session that he would have to start last on the field. Despite this, he wasted no time moving his way forward, cracking the top-five on Lap 12 before making a three-wide move for the lead on Lap 26. He avoided an incident ahead of him a couple laps later, taking over the top spot and led until a late-race caution came out with six laps to go. A brief sputter on the restart resulted in him losing the top spot, finishing the feature in second.
Spencer-Walt Motorsports is proud to be sponsored by Heidi’s RV Superstore, Jim Wilson Chevrolet Buick GMC, and Two Speed Motorsports.
