INNISFIlL, Ontario — When you see a No. 47 in victory lane, you expect to see Tom Walters behind the wheel. It was not him parking it in the winner’s circle on Saturday night, though. Instead, that job title went to his cousin Herb Walters.
The drop of the green flag brought forth a multi-car battle for the top spot amongst the Hot Rods, with close racing being the name of the game throughout the first half. There was some contact along the way, taking a couple pre-race favourites out of the equation. Though as the dominoes began to fall, both Walters put themselves in a position to capitalize at the front of the field.
Tom put his new build out front with six laps on the board, but found himself at the mercy of his cousin as the laps count down. Herb got alongside him, with the pair remaining side-by-side for several laps before Herb took over the advantage with three laps remaining.
Herb Walters crossed the finish line in first, with Amanda Balson edging out Tom Walters for third. Paul Bogensberger Sr was fourth, with Rob Bromley battling back from a trip through the turn three and four grass, along with climbing the frontstretch wall, to round out the top-five.
Early contact saw both John Gaunt and Tyler Hawn fall back in the running order, as each had to make a trip down pit road for service. Tyler Sagan was eighth in his first career Hot Rod start driving the thunderbird for Bromley, with Steve Book and Drew Robertson rounding out the top-10.
Notably, Sunset Speedway favourite Dan Archibald ran up front through the first half, before having to pull off with nine laps remaining.
John Gaunt and Rob Bromley won the qualifying heats.
