With another great season in the rearview, all eyes are focused ahead as John Baker Jr. looks to add another Ontario Modified Racing Series (OMRS) championship to his collection.
“I’m excited,” he said. “We are changing a bunch of stuff in the car and hopefully we can try and get back on top and do some more winning.”
Last season brought a lot of success for Baker Jr., as he captured the series championship in a year filled with consistency across the board.
“I would have loved to have pulled off victories at Peterborough, but I had a bunch of good second-place finishes,” he commented. “I was very happy with that, obviously, good points days. Most of the ducks just seemed to row themselves up last year in getting reasonably good track position and staying clear of the problems and putting a bunch of good finishes down was really nice.”
As he looks to continue building upon the success, he says it will be critical to get the car more settled going into the corner.
“I wasn’t happy with how it woo’ed up in the corners last year but didn’t want to take anybody else so a bunch of opportunities where I could’ve passed,” he explained. “I missed out on because I didn’t want to take out my competitor.”
The OMRS Championship season will see Baker Jr. run a total of eight races between Peterborough Speedway and Flamboro Speedway.
“Peterborough is more of a really fast lap kind of track, where Flamboro is more reactive,” he commented. “The scenarios at Flamboro change real faster but so you have to be fast and reactive, as well.”
For Baker Jr., it’s no surprise to see him behind the wheel as he was a “little trailer munchkin,” spending time at the track watching his dad race go-karts. He then turned 18, and got behind the wheel of a racecar himself for the first time.
“There’s tons of them,” Baker Jr. said of memorable moments in the modified. “I don’t know. I am going to have to say wrecking the car, having my sponsors and family help me put it back together, and then putting it in victory lane the next week. I would say that then turned into the perfect night to propose to my future wife. I would say that’s by far the best accomplishment in that racecar. Just the way the family came together and everybody worked their tails off to get back on the track.”
John Baker Jr.’s 2024 campaign will be supported by GEN 3 electrical , rotechrepair.ca Whitby South medical , Oshawa Hearing Aid clinic , MAK funeral home , vampire Racing, The Jube pub and patio, Cheryl’s decor and more , Robinson Solutions, Fotheringham bookkeeping, and his whole family.
