As the race season countdown becomes more clear with banquets out of the way and schedules laid out, it only increases the anticipation for what’s ahead for everyone this year. It also begins the conversations – whose the favourite to win a race this season? Whose the favourite for the championship at each track?
This is why we bring you to the famous Drivers to Watch List where we name off some of those drivers who are on the hit list. We are doing it differently this year, with no set ranking in place based on votes and such. It’s simply going to be alphabetical and talk about those who we feel should be discussed.
Think we missed a name on the list? Hit us up in the comments. Let us know. We’ll take all that into consideration, and who knows, maybe there will be another release.
A regular competitor in the division the past couple seasons, Cole Kamrath proved his ability once again this past year with the Sauble Speedway championship. Alongside the feature victories scored at the beach this season, he picked up a win at Sunset Speedway in June, boasting an average finish of 2.5 at the Innisfil, Ontario oval across four appearances. He also came close to winning the Autumn Colours Classic in October at Peterborough Speedway with a podium performance.
Avery Kirkpatrick
Avery Kirkpatrick may have a rookie at Peterborough this past season, but she was able to find speed with each week on the track en route to a pair of heat wins, two feature victories, six feature top-five’s, and boasting an average finish of 3.714286 en route to the championship. She also ventured out with a trip to Sunset, placing fifth in her lone appearance. She was also selected this off-season as one of the drivers for the Ladies of the Oval sponsorship in 2024.
Keegan Moat
Keegan Moat got a lot of people talking last season, thanks to winning the 2023 Sunset Speedway Jr Late Model Championship with three wins and nine top-five’s, boasting an average finish of 3.6 across the full season. He also showed his talent on the road, placing third in a pair of events at Peterborough at the beginning of the year before running up front at the year-end Autumn Colours Classic.
Was it surprising to see Lyla Sikma have success at Peterborough this past season? Probably not, considering the number of years her family has been involved with the speedway. It was still impressive nevertheless to see her pick up four heat wins, and three feature top-five’s, highlighted by a feature win on July 8. Finishing well in the final standings, she also showed speed at Sunset with a top-five in both of her appearances.
Wyatt Sprung
One of the coolest moments of the season came mid-season at Sunset in watching Wyatt Sprung score his first career feature victory. Ultimately, this could be considered a break-out campaign for the young man as alongside regularly running up front year-round at Sauble Speedway, he picked up two feature wins and five top-five’s with an average finish of 3.33 in six appearances at Sunset.
