Wally Wilson Reflects on Incredible Breakout Modified Season

Whether it was on the Just Foam It OSCAAR Modified tour, or at Sunset Speedway weekly, it seemed more eyes were focusing on Wally Wilson and the improvement he was showing behind the wheel.

“My thoughts looking back at our season are definitely that it was incredible,” he commented. “We improved each week and proved that we as a team are going to be tough to compete with in the future!”

The success on both sides of the coin is why admittedly, Wilson says it is difficult to choose a single moment that stands out from the 2023 campaign.

When it came to the weekly battles at Sunset, he put the No. 69 Modified out front for a couple of laps on occasion, leading to “battling with Andy Kamrath and TJ Edwards” en route to a series of top-five finishes.

When he would travel with the OSCAAR tour, Wilson began showing his strength by running inside the top-three for several laps at Peterborough Speedway before mechanical gremlins. This led to carrying momentum through the summer, and ultimately leading laps at Delaware, a track he says he’s “never run well at and never expected to!” Ultimately, the driver of the No. 69 Modified scored three top-10’s with a best result of sixth at Delaware in July.

“We’ve come a long way as a team,” Wilson expressed. “I know personally working with everyone at McColl Racing (Enterprises) and Wight Motorsports Incorporated, I’ve learned a lot and surrounding myself with knowledgeable people has definitely proven to improve our program! Especially when we made the decision to cutback to a single-car team and put all our efforts into the Modified!”

As Wilson looks to continue moving his way up the grid in chasing his first elusive checkered flag, it’s going to only happen in becoming more aggressive as a driver.

“I think it showed my inexperience when I fell back after being put three-wide at Delaware,” he explained. “I’ve been watching back all the races of ours I can and seeing where I could’ve improved and will do differently in the future!”

The future, by the way, is yet to be determined for certain as Wilson admits not being fully certain on his plans for 2024 yet. While he knows he will be out with the Modified on-track once again, the “other options sitting in the shop” leave people wondering what to expect.
