PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — It was a battle that went right down to the wire, with Shawn Taylor out-battling Doug Butler to win the Autumn Colours Classic 67 feature in memory of Melissa Bullen and Matt Spence.
It seems whenever there was a big event for the Mini Stocks in 2023, it brought out the best competition – and the finale for the season was no different. Although Doug Butler turned his pole starting spot into an early advantage, he was never able to shake the No. 76 Nissan out of his rearview mirror.
Butler would find himself hung up in lap traffic with just 35 laps on the board, with Taylor making the daring move in taking them three-wide to take over the lead. It was short-lived though, as Butler got back by him two laps later.
The final 40 laps saw Butler try and run from Taylor, but unable to do so as he kept himself within striking distance. The move would come with just a handful of laps left on the board, with Taylor looking to find a way by. He was able to do so with two laps to go, pacing the final two laps en route to winning.
As a result, Shawn Taylor takes home two of the biggest trophies of the year as he also won Frostoberfest just two weeks prior. Sunset Speedway Champion Doug Butler scored a runner-up alongside his Fall Velocity and Allan Lankin Cup triumphs. Will Gibbons’ return to the division saw him complete the podium.
Bobby Mercer continued to shows the wagon is fast with a fourth, while Jacob Sutcliffe caught everyone’s attention with a fifth in his first ACC attempt. Ryan Babin rebounded from a couple incidents for sixth ahead of Karl Sault, Coleridge Phinnemore, Chris Tubman, and Rob Crick.
Wayde Thorne was 11th, followed by Dylan Wills, Tyler Croft, Bob Stewart, Tyler McMurter, Carol Dawson, Nolan Gould, Matt Young, Mike Thompson, and Dave Dippel. Several drivers saw their race end in the first 12 laps due to a series of incidents on the backstretch including Kris Inglis, Tiffany Vandebelt, Bob Phinnemore, and Robbie Sikes.
