WILLIAMSON, New York — There may have been 29 cars on the track, but when the checkered waved, all eyes focused on the white car with a blue No. 1 on the door as Mike Leaty captured the victory in the Asphalt Sportsman event for the Race of Champions at Spencer Speedway.
Although Shawn Nye was able to grab the initial advantage after starting on the front row, he found his rearview mirror quickly filled by Mike Leaty with just 10 laps on the board. Leaty wasted no time making his way by, taking the advantage with just 14 laps on the board. It looked to be his event to win, though a series of cautions resulted in Trevor Catalano finding his way to the back bumper of Leaty. It appeared as though Catalano looked to have a way by for the lead, however a crossover by Leaty prevented that.
The battle ultimately came down to a late-race restart, which brought forth contact going into turn one, sending Catalano as well as fellow podium contender Andy Jankowiak among others around. Catalano would be sent to the tail of the field as an involved car, though not before contesting the decision for a couple of laps alongside Leaty at the front of the field.
Mike Leaty got a good restart, holding serve en route to capturing the victory ahead of Shawn Nye and Chris Finocchario.
Daryl Lewis Jr. and Andy Lewis rounded out the top-five, in front of Tony Hanbury, John Barber, Timmy Lewis, Ed Dachenhausen, and Joe Evans.
Shawn Nye now holds an 89-point advantage over Trevor Catalano as the ROC Sportsmans prepare for their next event on September 9 at Chemung Speedway.
