INNISFIL, Ontario — The Stewart’s and Kubota 50 for the Qwick Wick Super Stock Series at Sunset Speedway had a bit of everything – drama, hard racing, wrecks, side-by-side battles, and a great rebound – for the fans in attendance. Ultimately, it was Lane Zardo taking home the checkered flag at the end of the event.
Zardo was one of the drivers up front in the first half of the event, but also found himself at the bad end of one of the incidents that took place. On a restart with just 23 laps on the board, Shawn Chenoweth made contact with Gerrit Tiemersma, resulting in the No. 17 going around in turns one and two. They ultimately caught up other drivers with them, including Zardo, Steve Book, Rick Verberne, and Cole Burrows.
Restarting at the back of the field, Zardo carved his way through the traffic, avoiding the series of incidents that occurred through the middle portion of the race. His persistence paid off as he broke back into the top-five with 10 laps to go, giving him a chance to restart on the outside of the front row with a couple laps remaining.
He took advantage of the track position, taking the lead with two to go and leading the rest of the way en route to victory. Gord Shepherd, who ran the cleanest race of everyone in the field, scored the runner-up finish with Shawn Chenoweth rebounding for third.
Gerrit Tiemersma also fought his way back to the front for fourth, ahead of Trevor Collver. Carson Nagy was fast enough to challenge for the lead, and did so through the middle portion of the event. He had to work his sixth-place finish after he and Brandon McFerran came together with seven laps to go, sending the No. 93 to the tail of the field with damage. Marlie Owen was seventh in front of Roy Wilkie, Steve Book, and Anthony DiBello.
Paul Pepper got spun twice en route to 11th, ahead of Connor Maltese and Ryan Dyson. Dwayne Baker and Johnny Morrison got together a couple times en route to 14th and 15th respectively, followed by Brandon McFerran, Coltin Everingham, Matt McGrath, Miles Tyson, and Rick Verberne.
Cole Burrows crossed the finish line in fifth, but ultimately was credited with last after being found six pounds under weight in post-race technical inspection.
