INNISFIL, Ontario — Making the late-race pass following a restart, Jo Lawrence scored his first APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series victory of 2023 in the Stewart’s & Kubota 100 at Sunset Speedway.
After missing out on the pole by a mere 0.004 seconds to Josh Stade, it was clear that Lawrence had speed in the No. 78 Late Model. That showed in the event as he climbed his way forward after starting just outside of the top-five with the invert, breaking into the top-five at the quarter mark of the event. He kept the top-two within striking distance over the long run, making his move when the action broke out in the second to take over the runner-up spot with 27 laps to go.
It looked as though Lawrence was going to come up short on his bid for the win, when the yellow flag waved for Chase Pinsonnault going around in turn four following contact from Erik Della Riva. The restart was all Lawrence needed, taking the lead with four laps to go. He then led the rest of the way en route to the victory.
It marked heartbreak for Stade as the pole sitter led 86 laps en route to the runner-up finish, with Kyle Steckly rounding out the podium. Jake Sheridan rebounded for fourth after not being able to post a lap in time trials due to mechanical woes. Blair Wickett finished fifth after starting on the front row, in front of Jr Farrelly, Ken Schrader, Tom Gibbons, Shae Gemmell, and Shawn Chenoweth.
Erik Dalla Riva faded back to 11th after pacing the field early ahead of Cory Luciano, Chase Pinsonneault, Rick Spencer-Walt and Glenn Styres. J.R. Fitzpatrick suffered mechanical woes en route to 16th, while an ill-handling condition took Taylor Holdaway out of contention after spending the first half in the top-six.
A sour motor resulted in Danny Benedict placing 18th after winning at Sunset Speedway in May.
