PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — Despite entering the night with confidence riding on his side thanks to past success at Peterborough Speedway, Spencer-Walt Motorsports did not have the night they hoped for in the third event of the APC Auto Parts United Late Model Series season.
The afternoon started off solidly for the AP Emissions Technologies 100, as Rick Spencer-Walt showed some speed in qualifying with putting up a lap of 13.486 seconds to place him eighth on the board.
Starting third following the invert, Spencer-Walt looked to put himself in contention for the victory, remaining inside the top-five through the first 20 laps. Unfortunately, the handling began to go away, resulting in the No. 31w Late Model fading back through the running order. After falling outside of the top-10 by Lap 35, the issues grew from there with Spencer-Walt coming to a stop on the track just 10 laps later.
He brought the car down pit road, with the crew making a series of adjustments in hoping of fixing the issue. Restarting from the tail of the field, Spencer-Walt was unable to make up much ground, bringing the car down pit road on Lap 64 and done for the event. He was credited with a 17th-place finish. Through five races this season, Spencer-Walt has scored two top-five’s.
Spencer-Walt announced shortly after the event that the team will be shifting directions for the rest of 2023, citing the issues from Saturday night, as well as family for the reason why. Rather than running the tour, he will be returning to weekly Pro Late Model competition at Sunset Speedway.
Be sure to head out to Sunset Speedway on Saturday, June 24 to catch both Spencer-Walt Motorsports drivers in action. Rick Spencer-Walt will be behind the wheel of the No. 31w Late Model, with Jake Spencer-Walt in his Jr Late Model.
