Ontario Super Late Model Series

Brandon Passer Poise Up Front Leads to Victory at Sunset Speedway

INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite the race being filled with chaos all the way around him, Brandon Passer was able to maintain his composure and score the Ontario Outlaw Super Late Model feature victory at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.

The past Sunset Speedway Track Champion started on the front row for the 75-lap feature after posting a lap of 14.223 seconds in time trials earlier in the evening. He wasted no time showing the speed beneath the No. 17 and taking the early lead, stretching a small gap over the rest of the field. However, he would be reeled in by Ethan Cournyea, before ultimately fading back third with 18 laps on the board.

The opportunity to battle for the win fell right back in Brandon Paaser’s lap, though, when the leaders got together with five laps to go. He then out-battled Dario Capirchio through the final laps to secure the victory.

Ethan Cournyea was credited with a third-place finish, but a lot of people are left wondering what if in looking at the damage to his racecar. Cournyea had a commanding advantage until he reeled in for the top spot by Glenn Watson. Though it all went wrong when the pair made contact going into turn one, causing Cournyea to go around. Sent to the tail of the lead lap, he began to make his way forward, only to get turned into the outside wall following contact with Charlie Gallant battling for third coming to the checkered flag. Gallant was black flagged as a result of the incident.

Glenn Watson appeared to have the quickest car after setting the top time in qualifying, but found himself involved an array of cautions. He was able to find his way to the lead in the opening quarter of the event, but would be sent pit side for repairs after leaking fluid all the way around the track. Restarting from the tail, he began to make his way forward, only spin in turn three trying to get by Chris Burrows.

Another setback did not stop him, as he was able to drive his way through the field before the aforementioned contact with Cournyea. He was also involved in another caution when he spun in the closing laps once again.
