Coming off the heels of a great season, it appears everything is going well at Sunset Speedway with high car counts across the board last season.
“2016 was a great year for us,” Race Director Dallas Hofscheier said at the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Expo. “We had the super late models there five times with division car count up to 20 cars on some nights, we had APC in the house twice with good car counts, our home tracks NASCAR Whelen car counts are just unbelievable.”
One of the intriguing factors with own three core divisions is the NASCAR track sanctioning, which allows their drivers to compete against drivers across North America in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Standings. Both years, the track has done well in placing drivers in the top-10 in points, with Taylor Holdaway finishing the highest both seasons – third and ninth.
“We found that having NASCAR gives the drivers another reason to come,” Hofscheier said. “You’re shooting for something – points in the NASCAR Whelen, and all that.”
Outside of their own divisions, another big highlight is always when the APC Auto United Late Model of Ontario Tour visit twice a season, with the past two years producing memorable events. Both seasons the track has played host to late-race battles in the 100-lap features.
“It’s just been incredible,” Hofscheier said. “The APC is one of the best going series right now. They’re just top notch. Their show start to finish is just run very professionally.”
With all thoughts in a positive direction, there’s no denying everyone is hyped up for the season to kick off on April 29.
“We’re kicking off our season on April 29 as we have three NASCAR Whelen Nights before our Spring Velocity,” Hofscheier said. “That event is huge and has a bit of everything on it. The Super Late Models are there five times, Ontario Modifieds, two APC shows, Can-Am Midgets – just an awesome set-up and we’re looking for another great year.”
